Circa 2005:  DUDE…that’s about all I can say about this hike.  Those young whippersnappers from BYU can hike Mt. Timpanogos (11,749 feet / 3,582 m) to view the sunrise in about 4 to 6 hours roundtrip…some less.  But when you’re returning to Utah from Indiana where it’s approximately 300 feet above sea-level the altitude is going to kill ya.  I arrived in SLC on a Friday and made my ascent on a Saturday.  The weather was beautiful but it took me about 9 hours roundtrip to make the trek up and down.  Better bring a lot of water or a water filter.  There are numerous springs and rivulets along the trail but, be careful, a desperate plunge to quench the thirst could bring on a nasty case of Giardia.  I brought my PUR water filter and glad I did.  Once I hit the saddle (about two-thirds of the way to the top) I was gassed and out of water.  I refilled from the glacier and pressed onward.  The last 400 yards to the top are a grind but once your there it’s a sweet victory.  Look for the gold-roofed observation shack and your almost there.
